Samba reggae is based upon an earlier samba de roda influenced by Jamaican reggae.
Samba reggae is a celebratory street music which emerged in the 1970s in Salvador, Bahia as an expression specifically of Afro-Brazilian pride, in response to Rio-style samba which incorporated many European musical influences.
Notable bands included bloco Ilê Aiyê and bloco Olodum.
